Raised Roof Wheelchair Accessible Conversion Vans

Vans that have their roofs raised can be either full-size vans or minivans. For people who require more headroom, accessible vehicles with raised roofs are less expensive alternatives to vehicles with lowered-floor conversions. They also offer drivers a choice of four-wheel, rear-wheel, or front-wheel drive. Most wheelchairs and scooters can fit inside this vehicle.

However, the raised-roof van is not without some disadvantages. The vehicle’s high roof may cause clearance problems when entering a garage or underground parking. In addition, many changes are made to a van when a raised roof is added that may adversely impact its structure. This vehicle’s higher centre of gravity reduces its stability.

Wheelchair users may have other concerns about this van. In a raised-roof van, individuals who use wheelchairs are accommodated on a higher plane than other passengers, which reduces direct contact between them. The view outside the vehicle is decreased for wheelchair users due to their elevation. Moreover, a raised-roof van’s ramp must be steep as a result of the vehicle’s high ground clearance.
