Wheelchair access vans are available in side- and rear-entry models. Each type has its advantages, so the best layout is the one that works best for the particular passenger or driver.
With a rear-entry conversion, the ramp is placed at the back of the vehicle. This allows the wheelchair to be placed in the back or middle row, if there is no back bench. With a side-entry conversion, the wheelchair can be placed in either the middle or in the front passenger space. A side-entry model is also compatible, with additional modifications, with a driver's seat replacement for disabled drivers. Keep in mind that this layout may require special parking, such as handicap spaces.
There are several places to look for a new or used handicap access van for sale. Used vehicles can be found in local classified sections or auto trader magazines. Local dealerships may also get occasional trade-ins or sales on converted vehicles. Converted minivans can be purchased new from a specialized dealer. Finally, a standard new vehicle can be purchased and the conversion can be done by a licensed manufacturer.
Liberty Motor Company has been making rear- and side-entry accessible vans since 1998. For more information on purchasing a new or used minivan or to find out about conversions, call 1.888.578.8886 or send an email to sales@libertymotorco.com.
