Custom minivans do not have to be purchased already modified. If an interested buyer cannot find the vehicle for sale that matches his or her needs, customization can be done on most standard minivans.
Converting a minivan into a wheelchair-accessible vehicle can be done on nearly all van models. There are exceptions, though. Vehicles that have suffered structural damage cannot be customized. Also, vehicles with certain fuel systems are not good candidates for conversion.
Rear- and side-entry conversion options allow for a layout that works best for the needs of each individual buyer. A rear-entry conversion is more durable, but some locales require a side-entry model if it is being used commercially. In either case, the front, middle or rear passenger seats can be removed to accommodate the wheelchair spot. The preference of the buyer generally dictates which seat will be removed in the conversion.
Some manufacturers, including Chrysler and Ford, have rebate programs for those who get their new or leased minivans customized for wheelchair accessibility. Each program has its own rules, but in general, the work is done by a company that does accessibility modifications and then the necessary paperwork is filed with the auto manufacturer and a rebate is sent to cover some or all of the cost.
